4) Research - Website

Inspiration :

I like the idea of having a video playing of the latest single on the home screen as seen in Charlie XCXs website and Dua Lipa as its exciting and interesting to audiences while also promoting the artists website, they both also use convergence straight away by displaying there social media links. I also really like the bold see through font Dua Lipa used. As we can see below she continues to use this

I also wish to include a similar page of Adeles on my homepage.

As most music can be streamed through apps its helpful to have a digital track list too, as Ed Sheeran does

I like how Bon Jovi has spread out his latest news and linked in the bands Instagram account, making it a form of convergence and gallery. The colour scheme also clearly reflects the bands rock genre.

I like how Chaka khan has her own custom signature on her website defining and reinforcing her unique identity as an artist.

 Olivia Rodrigo

I really like how Olivia has displayed her merchandise, it uses a bright and cheerful colour scheme of lilac and white to promote her latest album while perhaps also taking interest of her targeted female listeners, we also see this by the decorative butterflies and stars. Its also interactive as you can scroll and click on the one you would like to buy while also being able to see what the merch looks like in front you as the artist wearing it.

I like and want to include the Spotify playlist like Mariah does.

Codes and conventions
  • Visual aesthetic: rock websites often use bold, striking imagery
  • Heavy use of album artwork or live performance shots
  • Dark colour palettes (black, grey, red) common
  • Personalisation: logos, signatures, and specific colour schemes that match the band’s overall image and tone.
  • Band photos and videos: Large visuals used to maintain their central presence
  • Live performances- music videos, concert snippets, or behind-the-scenes content
  • Stream-able music: listen to songs and albums, directly on the site or through platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, or SoundCloud.
  • Playable music videos embedded on the site.
  • Tour dates: A prominent section showing upcoming tour dates, concert venues
  • Merchandise: t-shirts, vinyl records, posters, hats, and limited edition items
  • Social media links: Links to the band’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok accounts often used. Some sites allow users to submit photos, concert videos, or fan art.
  •  large, bold, fonts
  • Contrasting text and backgrounds- (white text on a black background) to create high visibility.
  • Music videos embedded as well as behind the scenes footage and tour footage
  • Latest news:  band’s latest activities, upcoming releases, or behind-the-scenes developments are featured.
  • social media feeds (like X or Instagram) integrated directly into the website for constant updates.
  • Simple navigation:  (menu sections like Home, Tour, Music, Merch, News, etc.).
  • Mobile-friendly Design.

3) Research production

            Inspiration:

I really like how the editing balances between shifting from the band performing to the stories narrative, the setting is casual in the garage matching the setting at home. The fast paced editing works effectively with the song. I particularly like the manual zoom in on the close up shot when the lead is lip synching with the mic as it increases proxemics between audience and singers. the multiple angles while the band films is creative and effective.

I am in awe of the colourful blue disco lighting set in club. Again there is a good balance of the artist lip synching and the narrative. I also like Cher's style as she wears stylish, striking outfits, and the set is with bold vibrant colorurs and futuristic- like elements.

Taylor Swift portrays a character who embraces a darker side of herself, playing with the notion of a woman who is seen as a "crazy" lover. The video shows her engaging in wild, dramatic behavior, I like this as it breaks the sterotype of women being suberiant and passive in relationships, as it instead shows her having full power and control in the relationship.I also like the narrative showing an unstable relationship full of highs and lows- betrayal, jealousy, and intense passion, and her dramatic reactions to it.Transitions were slow to show the stability and power that was there, until one of them got angry and the pace quickens with the destruction of everything. Slow motion during dramatic parts (smashing his car)

I like the live performance element to the song and the rest of the band giving the video a quintessential rock feel. I also like the colourful lights and imagery in geometric like shapes. I also like Debbie Harry's facial expressions while performing and style especially with her platinum blonde hair casual flowing dress. My favoruite part is when the band starts dancing in the instramental freely with no choreography.

Codes and Conventions of pop rock music videos.

 Performance-Based Shots:

Band or Artist Performance: band or artist perform the song, either on stage or in a more casual setting (such as a garage in can we dance).

Many pop rock videos include shots that resemble live concert performances, with close-ups of band members playing instruments or singing (Blondie).

There is typically high energy and movement during performance shots to match the upbeat tempo.

Narrative and Storytelling:

Simple Narrative : a simple story or theme that ties in with the song's lyrics.

Themes of romance, relationships, or breakups are common in pop rock videos, as the genre frequently addresses personal and emotional themes.

The narrative often focuses on relatable characters, with the video portraying situations the audience can connect with.

Bright and Vibrant Visuals:

This can include neon lights, bold outfits, and lively sets.

Fashion and Style:

Casual or Stylish Outfits- This can include leather jackets and jeans for a more rock-inspired look, or more polished, fashionable outfits that align with the pop aesthetic.

Lighting and Camera Techniques:

Dynamic lighting-dramatic lighting can be used during an emotional moment, while brighter lighting creates a more fun and energetic atmosphere.

Quick Cuts and Close-ups: rapid editing, with quick cuts between different shots. Close-ups of the singer emphasise their connection to the song and help convey emotion.

  Dance:

Spontaneous Movement: In some cases, the video might show the artist or band members moving in a free, energetic way, matching the rhythm of the song.

2) Statement of intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? ( approx. 400 words)

My brief is to produce a music video to a rock song for a 16-25 year old middle market audience wanting to be entertained. I will target my product towards a female audience and intend the audience feel a connection and empathy through direct mode of address with the artist. My music video will have an upbeat disco element in performance and a toxic relationship . I will use costume such as a leather jacket and eye makeup to make my artist (Heidi) seem like a rock performer and include a band. The intention is to promote Heidi as a skilled performer and show the story of a toxic relationship. My video will follow the stereotype of women as victims in a toxic relationship and being vulnerable and hurt, while representing the man being the cheater. However instead of depicting Heidi as a passive participant in the toxic relationship, she will be shown reacting with anger to her boyfriends cheating. This challenges the stereotype that women simply accept being mistreated without expressing their emotions or confronting the issue. I will also use a range of moving camera shots making the video appear more upbeat and dynamic matching the song ' Heart of Glass' by Blondie. I will be taking inspiration from Cher and Blondie for lighting, the Vamps for shots of the band and 'Blank Space' for the artists dramatic response. The target age range is particularly media savvy, so I will be appealing to the postmodern urge to create ironic content by juxtaposing the content of the song. The lyrics, which reflect disillusionment, emotional fragility, and betrayal, will contrast with the disco performance, creating a tension between the external face of joy and the internal emotional pain the artist feels.

My homepage will contain a trailer like video encouraging viewers to listen to the single. It will also promote my artists album, an upcoming tour and merchandise. It will contain a small biography of Heidi (about me) and the band Static gold, there's an albums track list and its reviews. There's also a latest news section for exclusive updates allowing the audience to build up a connection and gallery. My audio visual element includes the small trailer of the clip playing of on the home page, bloopers and interview with the director, and other singles with interviews and bloopers. My hyperlinked page includes bloopers, interviews and music videos of the video and other singles, there's also a mobile version of the video. I will use a dark colour scheme with a bright accent and my website will be easy to navigate with buttons at the homepage, there is an interactive element where fans can reply on Instagram and X to a competition and sign up to receive exclusive updates.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)

The music video will have a link of the website at the end card, it will also have an easter egg of the boyfriend looking at Heidi's website. The homepage will have the music video playing in a trailer like way encouraging people to watch it on the hyperlinked page. The 'new album out now' section encourages people to buy the merch. The latest news section has an online competition and the message of the latest music video . There is also a mobile version of the song for phone users accessing the website. There are also social media bars of the artist continually across the website. There are also social media links on the homepage leading to Heidi's social media sites as well as the bands, the Spotify track-list also encourages users to listen to listen.
